Sasheenie Moodley, JS '17, receives a Rotary Global Grant to pursue a Ph.D. at Oxford

Sasheenie Moodley, the E. Paul Rogers Jr. Jefferson Scholar, was selected to receive a Rotary Global Grant Scholarship to pursue a Ph.D. in African studies, combined with social intervention, at the University of Oxford.

Over the course of her four years at U.Va., Sasheenie has demonstrated a passion for combating HIV/AIDS in urban townships in South Africa, where she grew up and spent most of her childhood and adolescence. As the founder of Conflux, a student-run global health and research journal, Sasheenie introduced a new forum for students to share personal insight into research experiences through the lens of global health and development. She herself has published a number of papers and articles both in journals and at conferences across the globe. Her work has been featured in The Oculus Journal at U.Va., the Virginia Journal of Bioethics, the Consortium of Universities for Global Health, the Clinton Global Initiative University, and the Human Development Conference hosted by the Ford Family Program & Kellogg Institute.

Sasheenie accelerated her academic experience at U.Va. by earning a bachelor’s degree in global development studies in three years, and is working towards completing a master’s in public health in her fourth year. She looks forward to continuing her efforts abroad, and says she is guided by the notion that “we should not aim to find the right answers. Instead we should hope to ask the right questions…how best can I serve, lead, and learn?”
