Maurie McInnis, JS '88, is featured in the November issue of Smithsonian Magazine

In 2014 Maurie McInnis, JS ‘88, curated the exhibition “To Be Sold: Virginia and the American Slave Trade” at the Library of Virginia in Richmond, a concept that grew out of her book Slaves Waiting for Sale. McInnis pointed out in both the exhibition and her book that while Virginia ended its participation in the international slave trade in 1788, and while the national ban was in 1808, the slave trade that continued to take place within the United States sent more than two-thirds of a million people from the Upper South to the Lower South — more than the total number of people imported to the U.S. from Africa. Smithsonian Magazine features the collective research and efforts of McInnis and others in its November 2015 issue.
