Foundation funds pioneering law professor and preeminent public intellectual in the area of digital privacy
The Jefferson Scholars Foundation is pleased to announce that Danielle Citron has joined U.Va.’s School of Law as the Jefferson Scholars Foundation Schenck Distinguished Professor in Law. Among the 25 most-cited law professors across all law schools, and one of only four women on that list, as well as a 2019 recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship “Genius Award”, Professor Citron is widely regarded as an expert in the areas of information privacy, free expression, and cyber civil rights.
Citron has published more than 40 law review articles, appearing in Yale Law Journal, Harvard Law Review Forum, and Boston University Law Review, among other major journals. Her opinion pieces have appeared in major media outlets, including the New York Times, the Atlantic, Slate, Time, CNN, the Guardian, New Scientist, and New York Daily News. She has given more than 400 talks, including at federal agencies, several major universities, and numerous think tanks. In addition, she has extensive experience advising federal and state legislators, law enforcement, and international lawmakers on privacy issues and has testified before the House Intelligence Committee, as well as before the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
Professor Citron is the fifth holder of a professorship endowed by the Foundation to join the University’s faculty. “This professorship recognizes the important role Garrett Schenck played in the formative years of the Jefferson Scholars Foundation as an early benefactor and committee member,” said Jimmy Wright, president of the Foundation. “An alumnus of the Law School and also a firm believer in the Foundation’s mission of attracting outstanding individuals to the University, Garrett would be especially pleased that the Foundation had created a professorship to benefit the Law School.”
The other four holders of the Foundation’s professorships teach in the College of Arts & Sciences, the Curry School of Education and Human Development, the Darden School of Business, and the School of Medicine.
