Two Jefferson Scholars launch a new student-run political journal with funding from the Jefferson Scholars Foundation
Eric Xu, the Roxanna and Ralph Joynes Scholar, and Eileen Ying, the Martin A. Purcell Family Scholar, approached the Jefferson Scholars Foundation in 2017 with a proposal. They wanted to produce a new publication at the University with the aim of delivering high-quality, student-driven political content. They simply needed the funding to get started.
The Foundation awarded Eric and Eileen a grant to help get the project rolling, and a year later the student-run Virginia Review of Politics has managed to establish a 15-person editorial, production, and operations team that gives student writers a platform to express their political opinions. Over the course of its first year, The Review has published articles on subjects ranging from environmental conservation policies to nuclear policy in North Korea. It has also featured interviews with a sitting governor, a congressman, and a senator.
