National Museum of African American Music has named Steven Lewis, JF '18, as its inaugural curator

The National Museum of African American Music, set to open in 2019, recently named Steven Lewis, the Edgar Shannon Jefferson Fellow, as its inaugural curator. Steven is a current doctoral student in the McIntire Department of Music at U.Va. and is completing his dissertation on jazz neoclassicism and African American political ideologies. As curator, he will be responsible for planning and procuring all exhibitions, and he will play an integral role in developing a new world-class organization dedicated to educating, preserving, and celebrating the influence African Americans have had on music.

Previously, Steven worked closely with the curatorial team at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., where he helped conceptualize and plan the museum’s music exhibitions, including the content for Musical Crossroads, an exhibit that traces the history of African-American music from 1619 to the present day.
