Madison Smither, JS '21, selected as one of 10 finalists for a prestigious science innovation award
Madison Smither, the Eugenie and Joseph Jones Family Foundation Jefferson Scholar, was selected as one of 10 finalists for the 2018 Nature Research & Innovating Science Award. This annual award honors individuals who have encouraged girls or young women to challenge themselves in STEM subjects.
Madison has an impressive track record of doing just that. Her passion to help students get involved in scientific research and pursue studies in the sciences led her to launch From Student to Scientist in 2015 as a high school junior at Benjamin Franklin High School in New Orleans. Through seminar series, partnerships with science-based organizations, and hands-on mentoring programs, From Student to Scientist encourages young students to reach beyond their school science curriculum.
Madison’s passion for science also inspired her to Safe Light at Night, a nonprofit that aims to educate others and promote solutions regarding the negative effects of blue light exposure. This summer, she continued her work in the sciences as an intern at two different Charlottesville-based biotech companies, Cavion, Inc. and AMPEL BioSolutions.
