Jesse Han, the James G. Simmonds Memorial Scholar, was selected as one of 10 recipients of the 2017 Ig Nobel Prize. Organized by Annals of Improbable Research and co-sponsored by Harvard University, the Ig Nobel Prize is designed to honor achievements in science, medicine, and technology that “first make people laugh, and then make them think.” Jesse was recognized for research he began as a senior at Korean Minjok Leadership Academy in Gangwon, South Korea, exploring why people spill coffee as they walk. His work investigates the physical interaction between the coffee cup and the liquid, and has practical applications to large-scale oil tankers.
