Gary Gallagher presents "How Americans Remembered the Civil War" as part of the Foundation's Warren F. Chauncey Lecture Series

The Jefferson Scholars Foundation presents the Warren F. Chauncey Lecture Series in American History featuring Gary Gallagher on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at 6 pm. Free and open to the public, the 30-minute lecture entitled “How Americans Remembered the Civil War” will explore how Americans who experienced the Civil War plumbed its meanings in four major interpretive traditions. Three of the four took shape almost immediately after the war—the Union Cause in the North, the Emancipation Cause among some white people in the North and black people in both sections, and the Lost Cause in the South. A fourth, the Reconciliation Cause, appeared somewhat later and won numerous adherents among white people throughout the reunited nation. Each of the traditions embraced a selective reading of events and allowed its adherents to take something meaningful away from the conflict that would remain the greatest event of their lives for most of those who lived through it.

Gallagher is the director of the Nau Civil War Center and the John L. Nau III Professor in the History of the American Civil War at U.Va.
