2011 National Fellow Francesca Russello Ammon writes award-winning book

The Society for American City and Regional Planning History has awarded Francesca Russello Ammon, NF ‘11, the 2017 Lewis Mumford Prize for her book Bulldozer, which traces how the bulldozer transformed from a weapon during World War II into an essential tool of postwar urban planning.

Awarded biennially, the Mumford Prize is designed to recognize scholars who best tell the stories of city and regional planning and its history in America. Francesca, an assistant professor of city and regional planning and historic preservation at the University of Pennsylvania, is one of 14 individuals to receive the award in the last 25 years. “I was really thrilled to receive this honor, particularly as it comes from this organization that sits at the heart of my disciplinary home,” Francesca said.
